Timeline
Heading into his junior year in 2019–20, Holmgren already had around 30 scholarship offers from college programs. On January 4, 2020, Holmgren recorded nine points, 10 rebounds and 12 blocks in a victory over nationally-ranked Sierra Canyon (CA), which featured BJ Boston, Ziaire Williams, and Bronny James. The ESPN-televised game had to be moved from Minnehaha to the Target Center due to high ticket demand.
Holmgren grew about eight inches in the year before ninth grade. As a freshman at Minnehaha Academy teaming with Jalen Suggs, Holmgren did not see much playing time, but recorded averages of 6.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game as his school won its second straight class 2A state tile. However, he was not anywhere near the radar of college scouts at this point. His sophomore season, he contributed to yet another class 2A state title by averaging 18.6 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. After being described as the "breakout star of the [state] tournament", he followed it up with a breakout summer playing with Suggs and their Grassroots Sizzle U17 AAU team in the Under Armour Association circuit, leading to multiple D-1 offers and a jump from unranked to a consensus top-five prospect nationwide. He was named tournament Most Outstanding Player after posting numbers of 19.8 points, 7 rebounds, and nearly 9 blocks per game. He also went viral in August after a double behind-the-back dribble on Steph Curry that led to a dunk at his own SC30 Select Camp. Two months later, he attended the USA Basketball men’s junior national team mini-camp in Colorado.
Chet Holmgren (born May 1, 2002) is an American basketball player who attends Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A consensus five-star recruit, 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m) tall Holmgren is considered a top-five player in the 2021 class. In addition to his size and shot blocking, he is known for his guard-like ball-handling and perimeter shooting skills.
His father Dave, who is also seven feet (2.13 m) tall, played basketball at Minnesota from 1984 to 1988.
