He is the first video game developer to have received the French Légion d'honneur on March 13, 2014 for his work, notably for the video game Beyond: Two Souls.
At the British Academy Games Awards, in which Quantic Dream won three awards for Heavy Rain, Cage stated that "games always explore the same things. They're about being powerful, being the good guys against the bad guys – that's a very tiny part of what can be done. There are so many other stories to tell, so many other emotions to trigger – this is a fantastic new medium, we can do much more than we currently do with it." Game developer Warren Spector described Cage as one of the best storytellers in the business, calling him a genius.
David Cage has been a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres since 21 December 2007, by decision of the then French Minister of Culture and Communication, Christine Albanel.

He formed a team of five friends and began writing his first video game script for a PC and Playstation port,After one year of labour, the final script consisted of more than 250 pages and hundreds of sketches and other ideas. He presented his project to the major video game publishers of the time, who showed interest yet refused to commit in the absence of a clear development structure.
