On 15 July 2019, Hwang moved to Ligue 1 club Bordeaux, signing a four-year deal worth €1.8 million per year. He scored his first goal in his club against Dijon FCO on 25 August 2019.
Hwang Ui-jo participated in 2018 Jakarta Asian Games as a wild card for South Korea national under-23 team. On 15 August, Hwang scored three goals in the first group-stage match against Bahrain. On 17 August, Hwang scored his fourth goal against Malaysia. On 23 August, Hwang scored his fifth goal against Iran in the Round of 16. In the quarter-finals, Hwang led South Korea to a 4–3 victory against Uzbekistan with his explosive hat-trick. On 29 August, Hwang added a goal against Vietnam in the semi-final match. With nine goals out of seven matches, his overwhelming performance greatly contributed to the team's gold medal.
On June 2017, Hwang signed a two-year contract with J1 League club Gamba Osaka. After an impressive performance scoring 21 goals in the 2018 season, Gamba Osaka named Hwang MVP of the Season. He played a vital role in the team avoiding relegation and finished as the team's top scorer.
Hwang scored his first international goal against Jamaica on 13 October 2015. Hwang scored the winning goal against Australia in a 2019 friendly.

He has also won the Korean FA Cup with his debut team Seongnam FC.
