During the 2001 NRL season Buttigieg was selected to play for Queensland. He was selected the following year in 2002 and played in Game 1 of the series. Buttigieg's final year at North Queensland came in 2003 and his last game in the top grade was against the Sydney Roosters in round 14 2003 at the Sydney Football Stadium.

1996

Buttigieg made his first grade debut for North Queensland against Balmain in round 13 1996 at Parramatta Stadium. In 1997, North Queensland joined the rival super league competition during the Super League war. Buttigieg made 5 appearances for the club as they finished last on the table. In round 6 of the 1999 NRL season, Buttigieg knocked out Penrith player Craig Greenhill at Dairy Farmers Stadium during an off the ball incident. In the 2000 NRL season, Buttigieg made a career high 22 appearances as North Queensland finished last on the table.

John Buttigieg is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. A Queensland State of Origin representative prop forward, his club career was spent with the North Queensland Cowboys. Buttigieg was a prop for the National Rugby League club North Queensland Cowboys, winning the "Players' Player" award for North Queensland in 1999. He earned Rugby League State of Origin representative honours in 2001 and 2002 for Queensland.
