Howard was nicknamed "the White Shadow" in high school. The nickname was given to him in 1961 by the Long Island press when he was the only Caucasian starter on the Manhasset High School varsity basketball team.
He is the son of Kenneth Joseph Howard Sr. (April 2, 1916 - May 14, 1995) and Martha Carey McDonald (July 7, 1921 - August 4, 2010).
He originated the role of Thomas Jefferson in the Tony-winning musical 1776 (1972), directed by Peter H. Hunt, receiving a Theatre World Award. Howard earned his Tony for his work as a young gym coach at a Catholic Boys' school in "Child's Play".
