In the early 1980s, he and Sgt. Slaughter had some of the most critically acclaimed and bloodiest matches of that time, wrestling in boot camp matches in many live cards. Their Alley Fight on April 21, 1981 was voted Wrestling Observer Newsletters Match of the Year.
