Schemmel first began voicing Goku for Funimation in 1999, replacing Peter Kelamis (who had in-turn replaced Ian Corlett) from the previous Ocean Studios cast. He has since been the most consistent English voice actor for the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball franchise; having voiced the older teen and adult incarnations of Goku in every anime series produced so far (Dragon Ball, Z, GT, Kai and Super) and nearly all Dragon Ball animated movies and video games, as well as the supporting character King Kai. In addition to his voice acting career, Schemmel was also an ADR Director and scriptwriter for NYAV Post, where he had directed and adapted for English dubs of several Japanese anime series. In the field of narration, he has won two awards for his audiobook recordings.

Sean was born on his mother's 20th birthday. He has an older brother and two younger sisters. His parents were later divorced. The family moved to Odessa, Texas when Sean was 12. Sean was adopted by his stepfather Franz Schemmel, a Lutheran minister. His maternal grandfather was a John Deere factory worker. In 1985, he moved to Fort Worth, Texas.
